I usually refer my patients with diabetes to Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).

MNT and DSME can be used together. Find out how with these resources.

Patients can participate in both MNT and DSME. Studies demonstrate that patients participating in both DSME and MNT have significant improvement in glycemic control. Patients with diabetes covered by a Medicaid Managed Care Plan can participate in both MNT and DSME, though MNT and DSME services cannot be delivered on the same day.

Compared to DSME, MNT is most useful as an individualized nutritional, behavioral, and lifestyle therapy for patients with diabetes.

DSME, meanwhile, offers patients a broad, standardized, evidence-based education and understanding of management of diabetes, including the following items which take more time than a typical medical appointment allows for:

  • Understanding diabetes and diabetes treatment.
  • Healthy eating.
  • Being physically active.
  • Taking medicine.
  • Checking your blood sugar.
  • Reducing your risk for other health problems.
  • Learning to cope with stress, depression, and other concerns.
