What is Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME)?

DSME refers to services that assist patients in managing their diabetes by providing them with knowledge, skills, and tools. DSME services (sometimes referred to as DSMES, or Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support) are a cost-effective, evidence-supported way to empower patients to better manage their diabetes-related health.

How does DSME contribute to better diabetes management?

DSME equips patients with knowledge and skills that help them respond to adverse diabetes-related incidents, and make healthier choices in many different areas of their lives. This evidence-supported method has been proven to work. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, patients who participate in DSME programs experience better diabetes-related outcomes than those who do not.
